First Chapter

The story begins with the death of Nick Nickleby, an old man who had a family consisting of his wife and two sons, Nicholas and Kate Nickleby. For the debts that Nick left, they were left homeless and some money. So they called Ralph Nickleby, Kate's uncle and Nicholas, he is a businessman in London, then it could help them with their financial problem. So Nick's wife invited him to a small house where they were staying.

When Ralph came, it showed in his eyes the sadness he felt for the death of his brother and was surprised to learn that he had died of a broken heart. Nicholas don’t loved his uncle very much. As Ralph Nickleby was a rich man and know many people, He was talking to Mrs. Nickleby about the possibility of finding a job of Kate, when he realized that the newspaper had Nicholas had a job opening for a teacher in Yorkshire, Northern London, far from Devon. Immediately, Nicholas and his uncle went to Yorkshire for employment and spoke with Mr. Squeers, the school principal, who at first he was surprising about young age of Nicholas but in the end gives him the job.

Nicholas is very grateful to his uncle and the next day went very sad Devon wondering how they would survive her mother and sister without him. Before Nicholas climbed into the carriage, Newman Noggs, an employee of his uncle, handed a letter to Nicholas where he offered a place to stay in London.

On the evening of the second day, Nicholas went to Yorkshire. Then he saw the school named Dotheboys Hall which was quite unpleasant. When he entered he met the wife of Mr. Squeers and talked about the parents of children who had paid their debts and the parent who not while eating the dinner a meal that was very cold. The next day Nicholas saw Mr. and Mrs. Squeers maltreated children of school, Mr. Squeers hit them often and very strong. But Mr. Squeers was very cruel to a child especially, his name was Smike, the eldest child of the whole school. The day before, Nicholas found him working in the kitchen very scared, so he told him how unhappy he was at the school and began to cry saying that nobody love him and that all he had in his life was suffering.

Second Chapter

The second chapter begins with Squeers that accept Nicholas to be his assistant although at the beginning he was unwilling to accept him because he was to younger for the work.

In the other morning Nicholas woke up at 6:00 am and hurried to the saracen’s head, in this part he was found a his sister, mom, and a strange man that was send for his uncle, this man gave Nicholas a cart. At six o’clock of the other journey Nicholas and Squeers finally arrived at Greta Bridge. mr Squeers and Nicholas took the boys and put them in a small cart. Nicholas wait in the card with the boys, when Squeers jumped down and shouted for someone open the gate, few minutes later a tall boy open the door, this boy was Smike, that looking nerviously at Squeers, Nicholas and the boys jumped down and go to the door with the boys.

The house was not a very welcoming place and Nicholas felt so lonely. The life of the Dotheboys Hall was very hard. They was no heating in the school, and the boys had to wash with buckets of ice water. They wore the same clothes every day and eat a horrible soup that named “medicine”, this was the cheapest food that Squeers could fine. The classroom was cold and dirty with broken windows. The cards of family were opened in front of the classroom and Squeers took all of their money. He did the same with packages and clothes, that after gave to his son Young Wackford that was the only boy who was never hungry and cold, his favorite activity was kicking the other boys and making them cry. And if they tried to defense themselves, he reported to Squeers and their was cruelty punished. Nicholas felt very bad to see the cruelty treatment that the boys received.

He was especially sorry for Smike. He was the oldest boy in the school, he was tall for his age, but his clothes that were much to short for him. He doesn’t take lessons, but he was made to do all the hard dirty jobs around the school.

The next day Niholas found smike tried to light a fire. Smike has a frightened expression, Nicholas was friendly with Smike and started to cry, telling Nicholas that was horrible stay him and that the only exit for him was the dead. Eventually smike stopped crying and moved away, like a scared animal, into the shadows. Later Nicholas sadly went to his bed…

Third Chapter

In this chapter of the book is about the time that Nicholas is on the road to London from Dotheboys walking when he meets John Browdie where they establish a conversation of their past and now when he realizes John, Nicolas this lame and apparently, no money and very kindly offers you a stick so that it would hold up and some money for the trip. Nicolas continued his trip and one night they found a barn where he decided to spend the night. The next morning Nicolas is surprised because within Smike hidden among the hay, when conversing with explains that he wants to travel the route to London, Nicolas accepts but not as a servant but as his partner .de thus continued their way up get to London and searched the house of Newman noggs...

He has a school bus doesn't realy teach his students anything. he likes to hit their students.


He's a poor young man, and he has a bad life. he's stuck by Wackford Squeers.


He has ones rich but is now poor, he works fos Ralph Nickleby.


He's a big, strong but kind man who lives in de country.
